After Abraham rescued his nephew Lot and defeated the kings, Melchizedek, the king of Salem and priest of God Most High, brought him bread and wine. And he spoke a blessing over Abraham saying, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand" (Gen. 14:19).
After this event, the word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision, with the covenant promise of descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven. And Abraham believed in the Lord, and it was accounted to him for righteousness (Gen. 15).
Now, Scripture does not tell us much about Melchizedek. We read in Psalm 110, that the Messiah will be a priest forever “according to the order of Melchizedek.” And this promise was picked up by the author of Hebrews, who presents Christ as our great High Priest, again, “according to the order of Melchizedek" (Heb. 5–7).
And so here we are, seated at a Table with bread and wine. And each week, this story of Abraham is re-enacted. Though we are Gentiles, by faith, we are sons of Abraham (Gal. 3:7). And we now are receiving bread and wine from our great High Priest and King, the Lord Jesus Christ, the greater Melchizedek. With it comes a victory blessing from God Most High, for in His Son our enemies have been delivered into our hands, and we may find our rest in Him.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
