A Call to Faith, Courage, & Hope in Response to the Assassination of Charlie Kirk
Lord's Day Exhortation
This past week, our nation experienced the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk—a vocal Christian, a faithful husband, and a devoted young father—brutally murdered while doing the work he clearly felt called to by the Lord.
For many of you, there may be images in your mind that you wish you had never seen. And there is profound grief and sadness in your hearts, for while Charlie was clearly an extraordinary man, in his work and in his family, he represented the millions of ordinary Christian Americans like you and me. He was one of us.
Therefore, this morning as we move forward as a church and a nation, I want to offer three answers for the question many are asking: “What are we to do now?”
First, you must be faithful. This means that in your hearts and in your families, you must be deeply committed to killing sin and walking in righteousness. Put off all ungodly anger, lies, bitterness, gossip, drunkenness, lust, pride, and all manner of sin. And instead, put on love, thankfulness, joy, humility, meekness, self-control, patience, and all righteousness. Worship God, pray daily, read your Bibles, love your families, and work hard. Before doing anything else, you must endeavor to live without shame before the Lord in these immediate duties.
Second, be courageous. Be bold in proclaiming the truth and opposing evil wherever God has providentially placed you. Jesus died and rose again publicly, and you are called to testify to that Good News publicly. Now there are many members of Christ’s body, each of us with different roles and gifts. But let this be a moment for you to consider whether God is calling you to something new—such as evangelism or hospitality toward your unbelieving neighbors. We pray for reformation and revival, we desire for Moscow to become a Christian town, and we need to live and work toward that end with godly zeal.
Lastly, be hopeful. Do not be dismayed or become bitter or jaded by this event; instead, trust in the God who works all things for the good of those who love Him. Our Lord conquered through death, and His church marches forward with that same divine path to victory. And so you must earnestly pray and trust that God will use this evil to turn our nation toward Him. But in doing so, you must first ask the Lord to start with you, and you must be willing to say, “Here I am, send me.”
