The Preacher of Ecclesiastes once wrote that “to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven" (Ecc. 3:1). Some of these seasons in life are predictable and expected, while others come upon us in an instant, and we’re not quite sure when they will end.
One of the great benefits of observing the Lord’s Day each week, and specifically celebrating the Lord’s Supper in covenant renewal worship, is that it becomes a sure anchor for your soul, even in troubled times. Through every season of life, through every trial and joy, this Table will be set for you each week. No matter what is going on, you know that you will meet your Lord here with the people of God.
In this same chapter of Ecclesiastes, we are also told that God has placed eternity in our hearts (v. 11). You know, deep down, that there is something more to life than your present existence and circumstances. And here in the Lord’s Supper, we are given a taste of that eternity, as this covenant meal points to the future Marriage Supper of the Lamb.
In his letter to the early martyr Polycarp, the church father Ignatius of Antioch wrote, “Await Him who is above every season, the Eternal, the Invisible, who became visible for our sake, the Impalpable, the Impassible, who suffered for our sake, who endured in all ways for our sake.”
Our Lord became man, suffering the seasons of earthly life along with us, but He now sits at the right hand of the Father, reigning above it all in victory. And He promises to meet with You here, and one day to bring You up to Him for all eternity. And that is Good News.
So with believing hearts, Come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
