All of Grace
Psalm 103 reads, “The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children’s children; To such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them” (Ps. 103:17–18).
God’s mercy flows from His heavenly throne down through the ages, upon each generation. But His mercy does not come in some automatic fashion, but only upon those that fear Him, keep His covenant, and obey His commands.
Here today, you are fulfilling these requirements by placing this covenant sign and seal upon your daughter, in obedience to God’s Word. You are taking a solemn vow to continue to fulfill your duty, to keep walking in the way of the Lord, and to hand the faith down to the next generation, teaching your daughter to honor God all the days of her life. And the glory of it all is that it is still all of grace. There is no faith, there is no fear of the Lord, covenant keeping, or obedience without the grace of God—“who works in you to both will and to do for His good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13).
So the charge is to entrust your daughter to God with humble faith, relying on His covenant promises and grace alone for her salvation, both now but also in all the years to come.
