An Eternal Resolution
This is the first Lord’s Day of the new year, and so on many of your minds might be some new resolutions you have for yourselves—different ways in which you intend to build better habits and improve different areas of your life.
Now this is not some modern practice stemming from the self-improvement movement but actually a very ancient one for it’s a very human thing to do—to look back, review, adjust, and look towards the future. And provided that your resolutions conform with biblical teaching and are truly for the benefit of you and your families, this is all very good.
But this morning I want to encourage you that no matter what changes you are making, and no matter whether you are successful in your goals or forget what they even were by the end of this year, there is something that will forever remain the same both in this life and in the age to come—the worship of God.
The most important habit that you have already established with your families is happening right now. It is Lord’s Day worship in the simplicity of holiness. It is the humble confession of your sin and the receiving of forgiveness. It is the sincere offering of your prayers as incense to God. It is the hearing of the Word faithfully preached. And it is communing with Christ here at His table.
Whatever your resolutions, Christ remains the same and He is forever for you. Endeavor to keep Him at the center, love Him with all that you are, and you can trust that all things will indeed work for your good in this new year.
So with believing hearts, come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
