Christ is Near
Eucharistic Meditation
One great benefit of the Lord’s Supper is that each week we are reminded that Christ is not far from us but is very near.
When Jesus commissioned the Apostles and His church to make disciples of all nations, He concluded with the great promise that He would be with us always, even to the end of the age. Although He is now bodily seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven, He is truly present with us always by His Spirit, and in a special way as we receive this bread and wine. For it is here at His table that the Spirit is pleased to lift us up to commune with our exalted Lord.
This means that when you eat this bread and drink this cup, just as your body truly receives these elements, so too does your heart and soul truly receive Christ. As the Heidelberg Catechism states, to eat the crucified body and drink the shed blood of Christ is “to become more and more united to His sacred body by the Holy Ghost, who dwells both in Christ and in us… so that we are ‘flesh of His flesh, and bone of His bone.’”
Therefore, remembering the promise of His presence: Come and welcome Jesus Christ.
This communion meditation was given on November 9, AD 2025 at King’s Cross Church in Moscow, Idaho.
