One error that well-meaning Christians often make in their pursuit of holiness is overlooking the mundane, everyday decisions in life.
C.S. Lewis captured this reality well when he wrote that, “Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of.”1
What Lewis is getting at can be summarized as follows: simple obedience today in the little things is the path to true, greater, and lasting obedience in more significant things. Victories today build up to greater victories tomorrow.
What this means is that you are called by God to make every day and every moment count. This is the Apostle Paul’s admonition in Ephesians 5, where he writes, “Look carefully how you walk, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time [making the most of your time], because the days are evil.” Each day, you are making compound decisions that are either bringing you closer to Christ, His kingdom, and His people, or farther away.
This must not be viewed as an unbearable burden, but a great encouragement, especially if you know your sin and weakness. The path to victory in this life is not far from you in some unknown future battle, but it is found in the daily decisions you make before the Lord. And when you commit each day to the Lord and endeavor to walk in His Spirit, you will be strengthened and readied for whatever is ahead.
So, ask yourself: Who do you want to be in five years? In fifty years? What kind of Christian do you hope to be? What kind of husband or wife, father or mother, or grandparent do you desire to be? In your life, what would be a victory that you could never imagine—say over the sins of anger, lust, sloth, pride, or envy?
Now is the time to sow seeds of righteousness, so that, by the grace of God, you can one day reap a harvest of joy that blesses all in your life.
