God Gives Himself
Each Lord’s Day, we gather together as the people of God in order to renew our covenant with Him through our worship and service. We do not do this because the covenant is about to expire or because God is forgetful. Instead, our worship is renewing the covenant in the same way that food renews the body or sexual communion renews marriage vows.
The culmination of this covenant renewal service is found here at the Lord’s table, where we partake of Christ in this bread and wine as a memorial. And as we do this, we are then calling upon the Lord to have mercy upon us because of Christ’s death. In our eating and drinking, we are pointing to Christ, our covenant maker and keeper, as our Head and covering.
In return, God is faithful to respond to the voice of His people. He remembers His covenant and comes to visit us with blessing. But when God visits His people, He does not just give us stuff or things. His blessings are really nothing more than Himself. God gives Himself to us, and we know this because He has given us His only begotten Son, of whom we now partake. So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
