Life is War
Eucharistic Meditation
Life is war.
Ever since our first parents fell in the perfect Garden, there has been an ongoing cosmic war between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman (Gen. 3:15). This conflict does not simply take place in the hidden heavenlies or in some faraway land, but it is actually all around you – in this city, in this church, in your home, and even in your own heart.
This war is inescapable; therefore, when the Lord delivered you from the dominion of darkness and graciously brought you into His Son’s kingdom, He was not setting you up for an easy life of comfort and rest. Rather, He baptized you for the battle. He cleansed your heart and your hands, so that you would have courage and be made ready for war.
If you are a Christian and you earnestly believe in the Son, you have been granted the gift of faith, and living faith is always active. We see this in the Book of Hebrews, where we read that great yet ordinary men and women of God—by faith—“subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, and put foreign armies to flight” (Heb. 11).
And so the good news this morning is that the Lord not only gives you faith to enter the war, but He Himself is the One who sustains that faith to the very end, and one way He does so is through this covenant meal. For it is here, every Lord’s Day, that you find a table prepared for you in the presence of your enemies. And it is here, where you receive your Lord.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
This communion meditation was given on December 14, AD 2025 at King’s Cross Church in Moscow, Idaho.
