Open the Door
In Revelation 3, we read Christ’s letter to the Laodicean church in which He condemns them for their lukewarmness. They were neither hot nor cold, for their hearts were tangled up in their self-sufficiency and wealth.
This church thought it was well off, but Christ revealed to them their true condition – that they were actually poor, naked, and blind. And so Christ warned them that if they remained lukewarm, He would spit them out of His mouth in judgment.
Yet He did not abandon them in their condition. Rather after this warning He lovingly called them to Himself again, to renew their zeal and receive from Him alone all that they needed to be truly rich, clothed, and able to see.
For He said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any hear my voice, and open the door, I will come into him, and will dine with him, and he with Me” (Rev. 3:20).
And this is Christ’s call to you today.
Has your affection for Him waned? Has your zeal diminished? Do you feel aimless or sluggish –as if your spiritual tires are just spinning? Do you feel lukewarm in your faith?
Then hear this good news: Christ is not far off.
He is not hiding from you nor difficult to find. He is knocking right now at the door. He desires to be welcomed in and to dine with you. He desires to be with you.
So as you come to His Table, forsake your self-sufficiency and your self-righteousness. Recognize that without Him you really are poor, naked, and blind. And then ask the Spirit to renew within you great affection and zeal for Christ – that you would see Him truly offered here in this bread and wine and that you would receive Him by faith as you partake.
Our Lord has come through the door and He invites you now to His table.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
