When we come together to the Lord’s Table, we are coming to remember and proclaim Christ’s death. Which also means then, that we are gathering to remember His great love for His people.
As we read in Romans 5, “…the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (vv. 5–8).
Christ’s love for you is not earned or deserved. It is not something you have achieved because you cannot perform for it. Rather, it came when you were most helpless, when you were without strength, under the just wrath of God due for your sin. Everything was against you. In a very real sense, God Himself was once opposed to you. You were an enemy of God, and yet, in love, He chose you to be a recipient of His unmerited grace and favor in Christ Jesus.
So this love of God is not meant to be a vague understanding that God cares about humanity, but a conviction deep down that God loves His people, God loves His church, and He loves you in particular. That is what you are remembering here at this Table. Christ’s great love for sinners, even you.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
