Rest at the Table
In my exhortation earlier, I said that there were no spiritual vacations in the Christian life. And this is very true – in this earthly life, there will continue to be trials and temptations to walk through, sins to mortify, and good work to be done for the Lord. We long for that final Day when all remaining sin and corruption is removed, when our bodies are glorified, and we enter into everlasting rest with hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Mt. 25:23).
But this does not mean there isn’t rest and refreshment offered by the Lord here and now. For the gospel itself is a message of true rest and peace found in Christ alone. As Jesus said, “Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Mt. 11:28–30).
Christ has accomplished it all. All of our striving, all of our doing, is working out with thankfulness the grace that He placed within us. Each week we are given a Sabbath rest on the Lord’s Day, a reminder of our eternal rest in Christ. And as part of this rest, you are invited to the Lord’s Table. Here the Lord has prepared for you a covenant meal, where you are a seated guest, and He Himself comes to you with great blessing and encouragement.
So with thankful hearts, come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
