The Father's Love
There is often a great misunderstanding regarding God the Father among believers and unbelievers alike.
Given that Christ truly does atone for our sins, bearing the wrath of God in our place, it is believed then that He came to pacify the Father’s anger. The thought goes like this – the Son, who is loving, died for us, so that the Father, who is wrathful, can be happy again. But this is absolutely not the case, and if it were true, it would rend apart the unity of the Trinity. For the Father and the Son have one will and the Son does not pacify the angry Father, but was rather sent by Him in love.
Consider these passages:
For God [the Father] so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son (John 3:16).
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8).
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (Eph. 4:2–5).
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 Jn. 4:10).
As you can see, it is God the Father’s desire, out of His overflowing love which He shares with the Son and Spirit, to save a people for Himself.
This covenant meal then is a sign of the Triune God’s great love for you. The Father has sent His only-begotten Son, who lived and died on your behalf, and now you partake of Him by the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
