The Friendship of the Lord
Eucharistic Meditation
One of the greatest blessings from God in life is the gift of friendship.
Consider for a moment your most trusted friend. Bring to mind that person you would trust your life with or you would want with you in a desperate situation. The one who has always been present and faithful. The one you speak your mind to without judgment or reveal your weakness to without being belittled. Consider that kind of friend. And now hear this: Jesus Christ is an even better friend than they are.
As He once said to His disciples, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for His friends” (Jn. 15). No longer were they merely his servants or students, but they were His friends. And so it is for you, provided that you believe. Jesus has proven Himself faithful and true, and He has demonstrated His devotion to You in His death. He laid down His life so that You would live. This is the kind of friend that our Lord Jesus is. He is your great God and Savior, He is the eternal Son of God – and He is also your elder brother and friend.
Now, while some of you may have just had sweet thoughts of a good friend, others likely felt a sting of pain. Of memories of a friendship that broke apart. Of a current loneliness in a new community or missing those you have left behind. If that is you, you need to know and experience the friendship of Christ, the friendship of God. You must lean on Christ in this season, seeking true comfort from Him and trusting in His goodness. As Psalm 25 reads, “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them His covenant.”
So come and welcome to Jesus Christ.
