In 1732, two Moravian missionaries set sail from Denmark to the islands of the West Indies. As they embarked and waved goodbye to their family and friends, it is said they cried out an earnest prayer, saying, “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering!”
In this, they were asking that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, would receive the full reward of His death, that is, that He would receive the nations of the earth. For this is what was promised to the Son in Psalm 2, that the nations would be His inheritance, the ends of the earth His possession (v. 8). Likewise, in Revelation we read that the Lamb was worthy to open the scroll, for He was slain, and redeemed by His blood every tribe, tongue, people, and nation (Rev. 5:9).
God was pleased to answer their prayer, for after fifty years of laboring there, the Moravians had planted numerous churches and baptized 13,000 converts. And God continues to reward His Son, as the gospel goes forth through the work of the Church, conquering the nations.
At the end of Revelation, we are given a glimpse of what is to come, when the Lamb’s full reward is finally brought in at the end of all things. At that time, the Church will be ready as a Bride, and we will be called to dine at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Rev. 19:6–9). And each Lord’s Day as we come to this Table, we are given a glimpse, a foretaste of that greater heavenly feast, as we are being made ready to sit with our beloved Lord forever.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
