Who Do Not Do, But Are Done For
We often view baptism as a public declaration made by the person being baptized. While there is certainly truth to this, baptism is primarily about what God is saying.
For in baptism, He is the one who is speaking, He is the one who declares that those receiving the sign are now covenantally His. And we are given a very vivid reminder of this reality when we see children baptized. As the great Princeton theologian B.B. Warfield put it, “Every time we baptize an infant we bear witness that salvation is from God, that we cannot do any good thing to secure it, that we all enter the kingdom of heaven therefore as little children, who do not do, but are done for.”
And so this morning, your children are now receiving the sign and seal of all God’s covenantal promises to His people. And it is now your responsibility to raise them in our most holy faith, reminding them always of God’s precious promises to them. And amen.
