With You in the Valley
In the beloved Psalm 23, we have a wonderful depiction of our Lord’s faithfulness to us as our Good Shepherd.
We read that because Christ is our Shepherd, we lack no good thing. He provides for all of our needs – giving us rest in green pastures and leading us beside still waters. He has brought us into His fold and now He makes it His duty and delight to provide for us and to protect us.
This protection follows us even when we find ourselves walking through the valley of the shadow of death. There we still have no need to fear, for our Shepherd remains beside us. We are never alone, even when it is dark and we cannot see Him, for His presence is ever sure.
Likewise, when we find ourselves in the heat of battle, surrounded and overwhelmed by enemies, He has a table prepared for us in His great banquet hall. The enemy might be pounding on the door, your heart might be racing, and our Lord is completely unhurried. Instead, He overflows your cup with wine, and beckons You to sit in peace, to take refuge in Him.
And here at this Table, each week we are given a taste of this reality. A tangible reminder that our Good Shepherd has laid down His life for His sheep. So if you know yourself to be one of His needy sheep, come. If you recognize the voice of your Good Shepherd, come.
The valley may be dark, the enemies may be fierce – but now is the time to be restored. With Christ as your Good Shepherd, come what may, you know that goodness and mercy will surely follow you all the days of your life.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
